The Art Directors Club was founded in 1920 and has grown into a leading industry organization, promoting art directors’ work through exhibitions and awards, including the annual ADC Award for design excellence. In 2020, the Art Directors Club marked its 99th Annual Awards and commissioned an annual book to celebrate and document the winning work.
The ADC 99 Annual Book uses restraint and scale to turn the cover into a physical gesture. A large typographic “9” occupies the front cover, echoed by a second “9” on the back. Only when the book is opened do the two forms align, revealing “99” across the spread. Bold fields of color frame the numerals, introducing a celebratory energy that contrasts with the simplicity of the typographic move. The design makes the act of opening the book an intentional moment, transforming a simple typographic device into an experiential reveal that underscores the significance of the milestone.
